
Dr Robin Abell is a Melbourne-based ophthalmologist who combines advanced subspecialty surgical expertise with a patient-centred approach to care. He is the sole corneal specialist surgeon, providing essential access to specialist corneal services for both metropolitan and regional communities across the state.
Born and raised in Hobart, Dr Abell graduated with First Class Honours from the University of Tasmania, where he was admitted to the Golden Key Society for academic distinction.
He completed a Masters of Medicine in Ophthalmic Sciences at the University of Sydney and a research fellowship at the Launceston Eye Institute, before undertaking his ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. He then completed subspecialty fellowship training in cornea and refractive surgery, and has since trained multiple local and visiting surgeons in advanced corneal transplantation techniques.
Dr Abell provides assessment and management across a broad range of corneal, cataract, and refractive presentations, from medical management through to complex surgical treatment where indicated.

Dr Abell has an internationally recognised research profile, with over 50 published papers and more than 1,500 citations.
His Masters thesis on femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery generated significant international recognition and produced over 30 peer-reviewed publications on the topic. He has also been involved in landmark anti-VEGF trials in macular degeneration.
Dr Abell is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Tasmania and a clinical teacher of ophthalmology trainees at the Royal Hobart Hospital and Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. He presents regularly at local and international scientific meetings.
