Monash House Private Hospital performs our first corneal transplant

Leading ophthalmologist Dr Robin Abell brings advanced corneal expertise to Monash House, expanding access to specialised eye care for patients.

Monash House Private Hospital is proud to announce the successful completion of our first corneal transplant surgery, performed by ophthalmologist Dr Robin Abell. The procedure marks an important milestone for the hospital, reflecting our ongoing commitment to broadening access to specialised, high-quality ophthalmic care for the local community.

What is a Corneal Transplant?

The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped surface at the front of your eye that helps focus light so you can see clearly. When your cornea becomes damaged, scarred, thinned or diseased, it can significantly affect vision and, in some cases, cause pain or discomfort.

A corneal transplant, also known as keratoplasty, is a surgical procedure that replaces damaged corneal tissue with healthy donor tissue. Depending on the extent and location of the damage, this may involve replacing the full thickness of the cornea or, in more targeted procedures, only the affected layer. The goal of the surgery is to restore clarity of vision, relieve symptoms and improve the overall health of your eye.

Corneal transplants are commonly used to treat conditions such as keratoconus, corneal scarring from injury or infection, and corneal diseases like Fuchs’ endothelial dystrophy. For many patients, the procedure offers the chance to regain vision and quality of life that may have been significantly impacted by their condition.
